About This Location

This member-supported subscription library is a beautiful example of the many educational and cultural institutions founded in part by Jewish citizens of Philadelphia. Jacob and Benjamin Gratz, brothers of Rebecca Gratz, were founding patrons of the Athenaeum in 1814. Its purpose was to “to disseminate useful knowledge.” Today the Athenaeum is a special collections library with related public exhibitions, lectures, and publications.
